Five Marketing Tools You Can Use To Put Some Personality Into Your Business

smileyfaceGone are the days when you needed to be so serious your face would crack if you smiled. Business these days means being social, getting to know your customers, and developing relationships with them.

Granted, you still need to be serious enough to show people that you know what you are doing, and can deliver on your promises. But, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with putting a little of your personality into your business and really letting people get to know you!

In fact, I would argue that your personality and your uniqueness is your best asset! So show it off, and give your customers something no one else can give them… Yourself!

Here are five marketing tools you can use to inject your personality into your business:

1. Social Media

Using social media sites is a great way to show off your personality. Sites like Facebook and Google+ make it easy for you to share your opinions, insights, sense of humour and expertise all in one place.

Yesterday we talked about finding out where your customers hang out on social media. Once you know that, you can choose which of those platforms best suits your personality, and get to work.

For me, that’s Twitter. If you follow me on Twitter, you will see the quirky side of me that rarely emerges in my blogs or on any of the other social media sites.

2. Videos

It’s not a favorite of a lot of people, but once you get used to doing video you open yourself up to a whole new audience. There are a lot of people out there who would much rather watch a short video than read a blog post. And you can show off the real you in ways that you just can’t do in black and white, or even colored, text.

3. Photos

Photo sharing is an amazing way to put some personality into your business. Just look at the popularity of visual sites such as Flickr, Instagram, and especially Pinterest. I had a client tell me this morning that Pinterest is the #2 traffic generator to her website… behind Facebook! And the statistics show that on Facebook, photos are the type of posts that get commented on and shared the most.

With photos you can share the fun stuff in your life, as well as family pictures, funny pictures, and anything else you think of that shows off your personality. It is important, however, to make sure you pay attention to what you’re sharing.

There are some photos that should never be shared in a place where you do business, and if you’re doing business online that means they shouldn’t be shared, period.

4. Email

It’s too bad, really, that email is sort of the forgotten cousin with the popularity of other forms of social media.

I believe that email is still the best way to build a relationship with someone, because you can either do it en masse with an opt-in list, or one-on-one with individuals.

However you choose to share your message through email, you may find it much easier to share more about yourself and your personal life than you would on a social media site, or even on your blog.

I know when I was publishing my personal growth newsletter, it was a lot easier to share details about what was going on in my life through email than it was to ever write it on a blog. Just to prove my point, you can take a look at my personal blog, and see just how little content there is on that site. And that’s because while it’s easy for me to write long-winded blog posts, it’s not so easy for me to share openly about myself.

Email gives you that safety net to be yourself because people have asked to be on your list, and confirmed their intention to opt-in. That doesn’t mean you have free reign to dump all your problems on your list, but it does mean that you have a little safer playground to share personal stories and experiences because you know who is getting the information.

5. Skype

If you’re a talker, then Skype is an awesome way to really let your personality shine through in your marketing efforts. Talking to someone in real time, whether you use Skype, another voice program, or just the plain old phone, gets your energy across in ways that writing and pictures never will be able to.

There’s a reason the best relationships are forged through personal contact, and short of meeting face to face, that’s about as personal as it gets.

I’ve only really just started using Skype and phones in my business. This is partly because I was a customer service rep in a former job, and I grew to really detest talking on the phone. Now that I can be myself though, and represent my own business and passions, it’s a lot easier to develop relationships by talking live with people than it is even by typing an email message.

So you see, business doesn’t have to be stuffy and boring anymore. These are just a few ways you can inject your personality into your business. By being open and sharing your compassion, sense of humour, expertise, and life passions with prospects and customers, you attract the people you are best suited to be working with. And that’s a win-win situation for everyone involved!
